Welcome to our 2025 edition of The TLAC Newsletter!

Vol. 3 Issue 2 February 2025

The newsletter published every month showcases the happenings in the community, local news and information, upcoming events, a gallery of photos from previous events, updates on the Arabic School, plans for the future from the board members, milestones for the TLAC, interesting tidbits, and advertisements and notices.

Our Arabic School - مدرستنا العربية

Our young learners are blossoming as they learn the basics of reading and writing the Arabic alphabet and words. Laughter fills the classroom as they practice the Lebanese national anthem and other fun children’s songs, preparing for a special performance at the upcoming Lebanese festival. Our precious students are not just acquiring a new language; they’re connecting with a rich culture and having a blast doing it, proving that learning can be both enriching and incredibly fun.

Love was in the air at Baytna this past Valentine's Day!

Our famous annual Valentine’s Hafle was a beautiful celebration of love this past Valentine’s Day! We enjoyed gathering for a lovely cocktail hour, eating delicious food, winning amazing raffle prizes and dancing the night away! Big thank you to DJ Marz (Ramsey Nasrallah) for keeping the vibes going all night, Yara Sultan (belly dancer) for her amazing performance and JK Photography for capturing every moment! You can check out all of the pictures on our Facebook page at ‘Triangle Lebanese American Center‘.

Message from the Honorary Consul of Lebanon in NC

Dear Friends,

I hope that you are all doing well and quickly emerging from the restrictions imposed on us by the COVID pandemic. I also hope that most if not all of you have been vaccinated against this virus. Having worked on antiviral medications the last few years, I can tell you that the vaccine is the best way to put this pandemic behind us and restart our normal lives.

Work at the honorary consulate has been proceeding nicely over the past few weeks with the exception of periods when I was absent for out-of-town travel or medical reasons. I am very happy to see members of our community come from as far away as Florida, Georgia, and all over the Carolinas to avail themselves of our services instead of traveling all the way up to Washington. In general, our services have been as follows:

We are helping with the completion of power of attorney documents (POAs – وكالات) for all purposes so that you can delegate rights to family or lawyers in Lebanon. For POAs, we have all the template documents and texts available and we need identification to complete the documents for you. Sometimes, your correspondent in Lebanon send you a specific document or text to use and we are able to fold that in the standard documents we have here at the consulate.
We are able to register vital events such as births, marriages, or deaths here at the consulate and communicate them to the Embassy in Washington.
With regards to passports, we are able to help you fill out the applications here at the consulate, but the process has to be completed by mailing everything to the Embassy. This saves you one step of requesting the forms from the Embassy.
The purpose of the consulate is to assist Lebanese citizens who live in the US with Lebanon-related documents or other issues they may need help with here in the US. As such, we are unable to assist with affairs or requirements inside of Lebanon.

The TLAC Arabic school kicked off the spring semester with a clear mission for our school: We
want to help learners acquire the Arabic language within a creative and fun environment
conducive to learning.

Our quality programs provide learners with the required skills to communicate freely
using the Lebanese dialect as well as basic reading and writing skills that allow them to connect
to their Lebanese culture and become active participants within their Lebanese community.
In order to fulfill this mission, the TLAC education team is working with a consultant
from Lebanon in order to build a solid curriculum that caters to the needs of our students. We
will host a workshop in May to introduce learners’ parents to our consultant Manal Shamma
Boustany, an experienced educator in teaching Arabic as a foreign language, as well as the work
we have been doing this semester. Stay tuned!

Arabic and Dabke Classes

After an extended Holiday time we are gearing up to start the Dabke and Arabic classes. We are inviting all parents who have children in the Dabke and/or Arabic classes to meet this coming Sunday, Jan. 10, at 4 pm. It will be a time of sharing, evaluation, and brainstorming about ways we can improve these activities for the benefit of our children. Please plan to attend and I look forward to seeing you. Lecture Series – Friday January 29th – 7:00pm – Dr. Abdul-Baki

The Triangle American-Lebanese Center is starting a lecture series, the last Friday of every month, to focus on various cultural and historical aspects of Lebanon. We are privileged to have Dr. Aref Abdul-Baki as our first guest lecturer. Dr. Aref has had a distinguished career as an agricultural scientist serving with the US Department of Agriculture for several decades and as Adviser to the Lebanese National Research Council and to a number of other governments. Dr. Aref will discuss the history, biology, and challenges facing the Cedars of Lebanon and the efforts, which he led, to protect and rehabilitate the Cedar groves at Barouk. You and your friends are invited to come and enjoy this talk. This lecture is open to adults only, as no babysitting will be provided. We look forward to seeing you. It is with deep sadness that we pass on the news that Rafic Toufic Yehia, the older brother of Samih and Samir Yehya, just passed in Aramoun, Lebanon on Dec. 1st. he is survived by his wife Wassima and children Bassem, Manal and Toufic.Besides Samih and Samir in Raleigh, Toufic is survived by sister Hadia Abu Diab and brother Wahib in Lebanon.

The family will receive condolences at Baytna (241 Horizon Dr. in Raleigh) on Sunday Dec. 13, 2015 between 4 and 6 pm. Our deep condolences and prayers are with the Yehya family who has been a great supporter of our Lebanese community for many years.

We have to show that our culture is not just about hummus, great food, dancing,  but our culture pushes us to go for higher education. (read more in the newsletter please)
The International Festival is next weekend see how you can get involved. The people who have volunteered every year and have missed their kids’ performances because they were working the food booth, need your help! More details in the newsletter.
